The Film Stars Project is a non-profit organization that empowers youth from under-resourced and traumatized communities through filmmaking and photography. Many participants face mental health or social barriers and are frequently stigmatized as “at risk.” The program provides a creative platform for youth to share their lived experiences and challenge public misconceptions through authentic storytelling.
Participants are guided through all stages of film production, including equipment training, concept development, storyboarding, scriptwriting, acting, and post-production. Emphasis is placed on collaboration, negotiation, and group decision-making, allowing youth to develop both technical and interpersonal skills.
By engaging in creative production, youth gain confidence, practical experience, and a stronger sense of self-worth. The program fosters community connection while opening pathways to future education and employment, including potential involvement in Toronto’s growing film and television industry, often referred to as “Hollywood North.”
